Week 4 of The Spring League kicked off with arguably the best game of the year so far as the Linemen rumbled with North Division foe the Conquerors.
The offensive fireworks started early for the Linemen. Quarterback Ryan Willis connected with Reece Horn, DJ Davis, and Tra Minter to bring the Linemen inside the five-yard line. The drive was held short of a touchdown due to a fantastic play by defensive back Robenson Therezie, and the Linemen settled for a 31-yard field goal by Johnathan Song, making the score 3-0 Linemen.
On the next Linemen drive, Willis completed a 19-yard pass to Ben Putnam, and thanks to a conquerors horsecollar penalty, the Linemen were well into enemy territory. The Conquerors’ defense held the Linemen to another Barnes field goal, this time, good from 49 yards.
A Conquerors roughing the kicker converted the Linemen punt into a first down, but that was not the end to the Conquerors Penalty woes. Three back-to-back pass interference penalties brought the Linemen all the way inside the 5-yard line. Willis and Minter connected for a touchdown, Song made the PAT and the Linemen took a commanding 13-0 lead.
In the final minutes of the first half, the Conquerors seemed to finally be gaining some steam. Running back Jordan Salima had a gutsy 4th & 1 play that brought the Conquerors into the red zone, but QB Kevin Aderson was picked off by Lineman JJ Dallas at the goal line. Thankfully for the Conquerors, however, there was a holding penalty on the defense, 1st down Conquerors on the 6-yard line. On the very next play, Anderson completed a pass to Cole Speiker to finally put the Conquerors on the board, and after the PAT by Cole Murphy, the score at half was 13-7 Linemen.
To start off the second half, kickoff returner Tavion Jacobs brought the ball all the way back to paydirt tying the game at 13 all.
On the Linemen’s returning drive Willis connected with Putnam for a big first down to bring them across the field, then ran himself into field goal range where they were held to a 43-yard attempt, made by Song, making the score 16-13 Linemen.
Brandon Silvers of the Conquerors lead his team downfield, ending the drive with a 13-yard completion to Speiker making the score 20-16.
On the returning Linemen Drive, defensive tackle for the Conquerors Deondra Tillman sacked Willis and forced the Linemen to punt. On that drive, Silvers connected with tight end Tavonn Salter who caught a ball that would have been good for a first down, but salter wanted more. After the catch, Salter made a 30-yard run for a touchdown and after the made PAT by Cole Murphy the Conquerors had a 27-16 lead.
Minter had a big 20 yard run for the Linemen to start off their next possession. Willis connected with Micheal Darius for a touchdown making the score 27-22, and after the 2-pt conversion, the score was 27-24.
After a big return off of the kickoff, the Conquerors were moving again, Silvers then connected with Matt Seybert for another Conquerors touchdown. Score, with 10:58 left in the 4th, 33-24 Conquerors. On the next Linemen drive, Willis connected with wide receiver Issac Zicco for a long touchdown run, and after another Song PAT, the score was 33-31 in favor of the Conquerors.
When Silvers and the Conq’s got the ball back, they made quick work of the Linemen Defense and Sola Olateju ran clear over 60 yards for a touchdown, they missed the 2-pt conversion and the score was 39-31 Conquerors going into the final 7 minutes of the game.
Micheal Dereus kicked off the next drive for the Linemen with a big pickup to bring them across the field, then Willis and Dereus connected again to bring the Linemen into the red zone. Willis and Zico connected in a big play at the goal line for the touchdown and a successful 2-pt conversion tied the ball game at 39 all. This score would remain as the clock hit zero, and for the first time this season, a game went into overtime.
In overtime the Conquerors received the ball first, but could not take the ball into the endzone, so, the Linemen started with the ball at their own 14.
Willis and Dereus connected on a huge play to bring the Linemen to the edge of the endzone, and on 3rd down Tre Minter ran the ball in for the final touchdown of the game. Final score 46-39 Linemen.
