The Spring League’s Southern Division’s season began last night in a Kicker’s Duel between the Sea Lions and the Blues. Nick Fitzgerald started off under center for the Sea Lions and was aggressive early. Thanks to some spirited play from the Blues defensive line, it was hard for the Sea Lions to get anything going.
Miles Schuler-Foster had a big interception early in the game, making way for the Blues by way of a 42-yard field goal by kicker Johnathan Barnes, to take an early 3-0 lead. The Sea Lions responded quickly with a 19-yard field goal by their own kicker John Baron.
After another Blues Field Goal Attempt was blocked by Defensive End Jordan Guest, Quarterback Nick Fitzgerald led the Sea Lions down the field that ended in a 25-yard field goal by Baron bringing the score to 6-3 in favor of the Sea Lions.
On the next drive, a 40-yard completion by Wide Receiver Davion Davis brought the Blues into the red zone resulting in another Field Goal made by Barnes. At the half the two teams were tied up at 6 points apiece, both defenses looked solid, holding the opposing run games to a bare minimum. Linebacker for the Sea Lions Cecil Cherry had quite the half, recording several stops before the buzzer.
After the half, Lucky Johnson recorded the first touchdown on the evening connecting with Deondre Francois for 6. After a missed PAT attempt, the score was 12-6 in favor of the Blues. The Sea Lions began to show some consistency in the run game, with several good rushes by Galloway, but a missed Field Goal attempt stalled that drive.
While the Blues made their way downfield, Sea Lions Linebacker Jeff McCullough made several key stops to hold the Blues to a field goal try, resulting in the score of 15-6.
Late in the game, Blues QB Deondre Francois connected with Tommy Lavine to bring the blues within a field goal, but the Sea Lions lead was too much to overcome.
All in all, the Southern Kickoff was a defensive battle highlighted by big plays from the Sea Lions Defense, Deondre Francois’s early second-half TD, and Field Goal Kickers from both sides really putting in work. Final score 12-15 in favor of the Blues. Both teams return to action Monday, May 17th, as the visiting Jousters take on the Blues, and the Generals take on the Sea Lions.
